UPDATE:

At Monday’s Vernon council meeting, the staff recommendation to proceed with purchasing a $300,000 new digital scoreboard at Kal Tire Place was removed from the agenda due to the issue with the ice chiller repairs at Kal Tire Place.

The proposal is expected to be before council at their next meeting March 25.

Kal Tire Place could be getting a new digital scoreboard.

City staff is recommending Vernon council approve $300,000 to buy and install a new video scoreboard to replace the current one which has been used since the building opened in 2001.

A staff report to council said the Vernon Vipers, as part of the BCHL, are expected to meet league mandated upgrades to their infrastructure and arenas over the next few years, one of which is a video display to support instant replay.

“The intention for this video display is to both support BCHL requirements, but also, for this item to be available to use to other user groups, special events, and Recreation Services programming,” Jason Blood, director of recreation services, said in the report.

Blood said Recreation Services could use the screen to display messaging and/or videos during ceremonies or drop-in program opportunities.

“The $300,000 funding request is sufficient to purchase a system that will satisfy minimum requirements. There may be additional funding secured through grant opportunities or financial support from other user groups to secure a more robust system, as needed,” Blood said.

If council supports the funding, the new facility could be purchased in 2024 and installed before the start of the 2024-2025 ice season.

City administration is recommending that council use funds from the Recreation Facility Major Maintenance Reserve for the scoreboard.

The funding request will be before Vernon council at their meeting March 11.
