Home team makes it to championship game at Coca Cola Classic tournament

UPDATE 8 p.m.

The Penticton Knights defeated the Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs 7-1 to win the A Event championship at the 51st annual Coca Cola Classic Under 13 hockey tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

The Vernon team finished with a 3-1 record.

UPDATE 5 p.m.

The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs will play in the A event championship at the 51st annual Coca Cola Classic Under 13 hockey tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

The Mustangs improved to 3-0 with a 7-2 win over the St. Albert Raiders in one semi final Saturday while the Penticton Knights edged the California Gold Rush 5-4 in the other.

The championship game will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs improved to 3-0 with a 7-3 victory over the Calgary Royals Friday at the 51st annual Coca Cola Classic Under 13 hockey tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

The Mustangs finished first in their pool and will take on the St. Albert Raiders (2-1) in the crossover playoffs at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The finals will be held Sunday.

Strong start for home team at Coca Cola Classic U13 event

The Vernon team is off to a great start at the 51st annual Coca Cola Classic Under 13 hockey tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

The Watkin Motors Mustangs won their first two games at the eight-team event that continues until Sunday.

The Mustangs came out of the gate hot, defeating the Okotoks Oilers 11-0 on Thursday morning. Harrison Sharman scored one goal and added four assists for the hometown team.

That was followed by an 7-6 win over the California Gold Rush on Thursday evening. Cooper Krause scored two goals in the third period including the winner with about 12 minutes left.

The Mustangs, under coach Brad Cruikshank, play the Calgary Royals (0-2) at 5 p.m. Friday in their final preliminary round game. The playoffs will be held Saturday with the four event finals on Sunday.
