The owners of buildings that were destroyed in a massive fire on July 4th in downtown Vernon are moving ahead with remediating the site.

“We met on Tuesday with a company that will be doing an environmental safety assessment on the property,” Gary Batula, property owner, told Vernon Matters. “Once we have those results we can talk to a demolition company and map out the next steps.”

The charred debris from the fire has been visible to passer-bys for more than three months.

As for the future of the site at 2800 30th Street, no plans have been finalized, other than for parking.

“We want to do something sooner than later,” Batula stated.

Okanagan Eatery and several other businesses were destroyed in the early morning blaze that was deemed suspicious.

An official cause of the fire hasn’t been determined as police continue to investigate.
