Secondary homes on farmland given green light

Coldstream is making it easier to build secondary homes on farmland.

District council has adopted a change to its official community plan to allow for second homes on properties in the agricultural land reserve (ALR) four hectares (10 acres) or larger.

“The Farmland Residential development permit is intended to ensure that a second dwelling on agricultural properties are located on properties to minimize the loss of potential farmland, limit the possibility of future subdivisions in the ALR, and minimize impacts on neighbouring agricultural or residential parcels,” a staff report to council stated.

A simplified review process will be used for the owner to get a development permit.
