The highway between Summerland and Peachland will be closed over the long weekend as work at the site continues.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said geotechnical engineers have placed sensors in the area which, as of Friday, September 1, continued to show movement of the slope above the highway.

Engineers will be collecting data through the weekend to get more information on the condition of the slope and risk of further rockfalls, and as of time of publication, there was no estimate for when the highway would reopen for the public.

The province did state that approval has been given to clear one lane of the highway for use of emergency vehicles only, noting specific site safety protocols would be in place for emergency travel along the route.

On Thursday, the province announced the opening of two routes for people travelling between Kelowna and Penticton and between Summerland and Peachland, each of which are unpaved and had travel times of 60 to 90 minutes more than the highway route. Though those routes are open, motorists are still advised to use Highways 97C, 5A or 33 to travel up and down the Okanagan.

The rockslide ocurred Monday, August 28, and the province stated more than 3,000 cubic kilograms of rocks fell on the highway.

The Ministry of Transportation noted an update on the slope condition would be provided after the long weekend, pending the geotechnical assessments.
