Vernon electric scooter survey ready to roll out

Apr 10, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The City of Vernon is going to find out what residents think about electric scooters.

Since 2021, the city has been participating in the province’s electric kick scooter pilot program, which is set to end on April 5, 2024.

City staff will be launching public participation, including a community survey, on e-scooters later this month.

“The purpose of the public participation is to gather feedback for the city and province to consider for future e-scooter regulations,” a staff report to Vernon council said.

Further details will be released in late April to coincide with the launch of the survey

Vernon is one of twelve communities that were selected by the provincial government to pilot and assess the use of electric kick scooters for personal transportation in our community.

Residents and visitors can ride electric kick scooters within Vernon city limits provided their device meets the requirements outlined in the Motor Vehicle Act.

Neuron Mobility also operates a fleet of electric kick scooters and bikes that people can rent in Vernon.

City leaders see the devices as an environmentally-friendly way for people to get around.

Neuron said 142,000 riders in Vernon travelled 290,000 km on the devices in 2022, and 40 per cent of Neuron trips replaced a car journey, avoiding 29 tonnes of CO2 emissions to date.
