Warning tickets issued for ‘Slow down and move over’ campaign

Oct 17, 2022 | 5:00 PM

RCMP and the BC Automobile Association (BCAA) will be conducting safety stops on Tuesday (Oct. 18) to remind drivers to slow down and move over when approaching stopped vehicles displaying emergency lights.

Police will be handing out warning letters near Ellison Lake on Highway 97 North notifying drivers about the rules of the road and reminding them to drive safely.

“Every year, roadside workers face the threat of serious injury or death when drivers don’t follow this law. Drivers need to understand that everyone has a role to play when it comes to safety on the roads,” a news release from RCMP stated.

In British Columbia, motorists are required to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped alongside the road that have flashing red, blue or yellow lights. This includes maintenance workers, utility workers, police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement personnel, land surveyors, animal control workers, garbage collectors and other roadside workers.
