UPDATE: Vernon golfer in top 50 at at Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship

A Vernon golfer finished in the top 50 at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship in Vancouver.

Cooper Humphreys from the Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna, carded rounds of 76, 69, 72 and 72 on the Point Grey and Seymour courses for a four day total of five-over par 289, tied for 47th place.

Two other local golfers, Ryan Vest of Vernon and Braxton McDonald of Coldstream, did not make the cut for the final two rounds.

Luis Carrera of Mexico City, Mexico fired a final round of 5-under 66 to win the 117th edition of the tournament by two strokes with a 10-under par total. Mississauga, Ont. native Robbie Latter was second and Canadian Remi Chartier was third at 6-under.

Vernon golfer makes cut at Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship

One of the three golfers from Greater Vernon has made the cut to play in the final two rounds of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship in Vancouver.

Cooper Humphreys of Vernon, who plays out of the Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna, has carded rounds of 76 and 69 for a 3-over par 145 total, tied for 37th place at the midway point.

Two other local athletes were not able to qualify for the final rounds, which includes the top 70 golfers.

Ryan Vest of Vernon (Harvest Golf Club) shot an 83 Monday and then a 73 Tuesday for a 14-over total.

Braxton McDonald of Coldstream (Vernon Golf Club) shot two consecutive rounds of 82 for a +22 score.

As of 12 p.m. today, Eric Zhao of North York, Ontario was tied with three others for the co-lead in round three.

The 117th edition of the tournament is being held at the Seymour and Point Grey golf courses.

Local golfers in field for Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship

Three golfers from Greater Vernon are among a field of 252 hopefuls at the 117th Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship in Vancouver.

The championship, which was first held in 1895, is the oldest amateur championship in the country.

The tournament involves 72 holes of stroke play at the Seymour Golf and Country Club, and Point Grey Golf and Country Club. The field will be cut to the low 70 players (including ties) following 36 holes.

Cooper Humphreys of Vernon (Harvest Golf Club) was the top local golfer with a 5-over par 76 on day one Monday. Braxton McDonald of Coldstream (Vernon Golf Club) shot an 11-over 82, and Ryan Vest of Vernon (Harvest Golf Club) carded an 12-over 83.

American Luke Gutschewski from Elkhorn, Nebraska, had the lead after round one with a 6-under 65 while Kai Iguchi of Banff, Alta. was second with a 4-under 67.

The winner will earn an exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open at Oakdale Golf & Country Club, as well as the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship August 15-22 in Paramus, N.J.

New to this year’s tournament is a purse payout. To align with the modernized rules of amateur status, players at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will now compete for a purse of $8,000 CAD. Amateur golfers may accept prize money up to a maximum of $1,200 CAD, and payouts will be awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties.
