Cougar Sighting

Cougar reportedly spotted in Vernon Thursday morning

Jul 8, 2022 | 10:47 AM

The Wildlife Alert Reporting Program said a cougar was spotted near Pleasant Valley Rd. on 37th Ave and was reported by the Conservation Officer Service at 8:38 a.m. Thursday, July 7.

The report did not state whether the animal was captured and relocated or fled the scene.

Vernon Matters is awaiting a response to a request for comment from the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.

Wildsafe B.C. said cougars usually prey on deer, but will also hunt smaller mammals when the opportunity presents itself and reminds pet owners to not leave their animals unattended outdoors, especially at night.

Wildsafe B.C. notes that anyone who comes across a cougar should not turn and run, but instead make themselves look as big as possible, back away slowly, and make loud noises to show the big cat you are not prey. People with small pets or children should also pick them up before backing away.
