BCHL to introduce video review program

Dec 9, 2021 | 1:15 PM

The B.C. Hockey League is implementing a new video review program that will start in Chilliwack, with others teams able to join it as well.

The Chiefs will be the first BCHL team to use Sporfie video review full time, starting this weekend.

The program will allow for goal reviews through an iPad at the scorekeeper’s box if initiated by on-ice officials.

Goals may be reviewed to determine whether the puck entered the net; wether the puck entered the net as a result of an illegal play; goaltender interference; or if the net was knocked off by the defending team in a situation where officials are questioning the validity of a goal in relation to the original placement of the net.

“We are excited to introduce a new video review system after a successful pilot project in the fall,” said BCHL Deputy Commissioner Steven Cocker.

“We see this as another step towards modernizing our game and keeping pace with college and professional hockey. Over the next few years, we anticipate the majority of our facilities will be able to implement video review.”

The Chiefs had already participated in video review pilot projects during the preseason and at the BCHL Showcase event in October, both of which were considered successful.
