City asks drivers to slow down as snow clearing continues

With the snow expected to continue to fall in Vernon through the day, the city is asking drivers to adjust driving habits and be safe on the road.

Flurries are in the forecast through the day and into the night, and while asking the public to slow down and drive to conditions, the municipality said work is underway to make the roads more driveable.

“City of Vernon snow clearing equipment and personnel are ready for the season and trucks are out across the city today (Thursday),” said Ian Adkins, manager of Roads, Drainage and Airport.

“Our crews clear roads, lanes and cul-de-sacs on a priority basis, according the city’s Snow and Ice Control Policy.”

The city notes that Priority 1 roads consists of arterials, collectors, bus routes, school zones and selected problem areas. Priority 2 roads include all remaining roads except lanes and cul-de-sacs, which are part of the Priority 3 roads classification.

Depending on the scope and length of the snowfall, it could take crews up to 72 hours to reach all portions of the city once the snow has stopped falling.

If the snow continues to come down, crews may be required to return to Priority 1 roads to ensure the city keeps moving.

Residents and tenants of both residential and commercial properties are responsible for sidewalks, and the city said it’s important these areas are kept clear for the safety of the public.

Snow removed from sidewalks, walkways and driveways should not be piled on travel lanes, storm drains, around fire hydrants or at bus pickup/drop off areas, as it can create issues for travel and safety concerns for the community.
