Mudslide closes Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt  UPDATE: 6 a.m. Nov. 15

Heavy rain across British Columbia has led to several closures on major highways connecting the Lower Mainland and the Interior region of the province.

DriveBC says Highway 5 is closed both ways between Hope and Merritt because of a mudslide, and drivers are being rerouted to Highway 3.

It is also reporting that Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon is closed in both directions due to rocks on the road north of Yale.

Highway 1 is closed to eastbound traffic east of Chilliwack, as crews respond to a large mudslide through the Herrling Island area.

And Highway 11 is closed in both directions for nearly half a kilometre due to flooding between the start of Highway 11 and 4th Avenue.

DriveBC says there is currently no access to the Sumas border crossing to the U.S., but officials are assessing the situation. It says drivers can use the Aldergrove crossing until its regular closing at 8 p.m., or cross through the Peace Arch or Pacific Highway crossings which will remain open overnight.

UPDATE (3 p.m.): DriveBC says the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope is closed until noon on Monday (Nov. 15).

Additionally, a rock slide south of Spuzzum has closed the Trans Canada Highway between Lytton and Hope. Detours are available via Highway 3 and 99.

A travel advisory is also in effect on the Trans Canada Highway between Lytton and Spences Bridge as heavy rain is expected between Sunday and Tuesday (Nov. 16). Closures may result due to the risk of sudden debris flows in fire affected areas.

DriveBC says conditions are dynamic and crews are responding as safely and as quickly as possible. Drivers are asked to avoid any unnecessary travel.

EARLIER: The Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope is closed due to a mudslide.

An alternate route is available via Highway 3, but DriveBC says there’s no estimated time for re-opening.

DriveBC says an assessment is in progress and the next update will be provided at around 1:30 p.m.

A rainfall warning was issued by Environment Canada due to an atmospheric river event.
