A small business walk and the business excellence awards events are planned to mark the 2021 Small Business Week in Vernon.

The city will receive the 2021 Small Business Week Community Activity Schedule from the Economic Development and Tourism Manager at its council meeting this afternoon, Oct. 25.

The schedule notes the department will host the Business Walks on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

That program will involve teams of community volunteers visiting businesses throughout Vernon to do a five to 10 minute check-in. Volunteers will ask business owners and managers nine questions aimed at gathering information on operations and finding opportunities to connect business support services with local businesses. A summary report of the results will be brought before council later this year.

The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce will host its 37th Business Excellence Awards on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. with Beach Radio’s Brian Martin and Rebecca Barton as MCs. The event at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre will also be live streamed.

The ceremony will recognize the success and achievements of local businesses and non-profits across 16 categories; Large, Medium and Small Business of the Year; Business Leader of the Year; Customer Service Excellence; Diversity Excellence; Employer of the Year; New Business of the Year; Non-Profit Excellence; Professional Business of the Year; Restaurant of the Year; Retail Business of the Year; Tourism Excellence; Trades Business of the Year; and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The Chamber has received more than 389 nominations from the community which were reviewed and scored by a panel of judges.

The activity schedule also notes that Valley-Wide Small Business Week Workshops were hosted by Community Futures North Okanagan over the past week. Small businesses in the region were able to participate in ‘Doing Business in Uncertain Times,’ ‘Recruitment and Retention,’ and ‘Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ workshops through this event.
