Fire Guard

Fire guard being established near Lumby

Oct 21, 2021 | 1:10 PM

Lumby residents may notice more noise coming the north west side of the community as a new fire guard is established.

The Village of Lumby is working with the Monashee Community Forest to create a prescribed fire guard in the region.

In a Facebook post, the Village said the Monashee Community Forest has received $667,000 in funding from the B.C. Government to conduct wildfire reduction prescription development and operational treatments. A portion of the funding will be used to log approximately 77 hectares on gentle and moderately steep slopes within the Monashee Community Forest, west of Lumby.

The village noted the work to establish the fire guard includes crown thinning, ladder fuel removal, machine and hand piling of ground fuel, and pile burning. This will ensure the fuel sources in the area are reduced, and that the area will be less susceptible to ignition, resulting in reduced risk of a fire spreading into the village.

The provincial funding will also create job opportunities for contractors specializing in fuel reduction work, including First Nations contractors, local contractors, and Monashee Community Forest partners.

The work will require early morning operations due to the dryness of the bush.
