Oct 16, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The Vernon Vipers are 0-2 to start the new BC Hockey League season after a 4-2 loss to the Silverbacks in Salmon Arm Friday night.

Simon Tassy, a Monteal native in his third season with the Sbacks, was the first star with three goals while JoJO Tanaka-Campbell and Luke Buss scored for Vernon.

The Vipers host the Silverbacks for their home opner at 6 p.m. tonight at Kal Tire Place also on 107.5 Beach Radio with Graham Turnbull at 5:45 p.m. pre game.

Here is the game recap from the Vernon Vipers website:

JoJo Tanaka-Campbell and Luke Buss provided the offense Friday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Vipers dropped their second straight game by a 4-2 score.

The Vipers had some jump in the first period, but an unfortunate bounce put them behind the eight ball as Simon Tassy banked home a dump in from a sharp angle to make it 1-0.

The Vipers forecheck was responsible for the next goal as Cam MacDonald gloved down a clearing attempt then set up JoJo Tanaka-Campbell making it 1-1 as he snapped home a shot to the glove side.

Salmon Arm took over the second thanks in large part to Simon Tassy who scored his second and third goals of the game on some strange bounces. Noah Serdachny assisted on both goals. The Vipers were outshot 12-5 in the middle period and trailed 3-1.

In the third, a neutral zone turnover cost the Vipers a goal as Brandon Santa Juana scored to make it 4-1.

Late in the game Luke Buss scored his first BCHL goal to get it a bit closer. The Vipers tried their luck 6 on 5, but couldn’t get it any closer as the final was 4-2.

The Vipers will host Salmon Arm in the second of back to back games Saturday night at 6pm for their home opener.
