Area residents encouraged to take part in 9 p.m. Routine

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is asking residents to do their part in crime prevention by taking part in the 9 p.m. Routine initiative.

Mounties say area residents should be checking their properties and vehicles each evening at 9 p.m. to ensure there are no valuables left in plain view, and that all doors and windows are locked and secured.

By following the 9 p.m. Routine strategy, residents end up protecting their properties by taking away any incentives for opportunistic criminals.

The 9 p.m. Routine steps include:

Removing spare keys, garage door openers, electronics and other valuables from vehicles
Ensure home and vehicle doors and windows are shut and locked
Put away and secure all items around a home
Secure sheds and outbuildings

“Leaving valuables in plain sight in your vehicle or around your home is an open invitation for someone to steal them,” states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

“Don’t make yourself an easy target. By taking part in the 9PM Routine and securing your property you are making a significant contribution to reducing and preventing this type of crime in our community.”

The 9 p.m. Routine was initially launched by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office in Florida, and has since grown to become a North America wide initiative.
