More Talk On Enderby Schools Restructuring Options

A proposed restructuring of Enderby area schools is still getting a rough ride from some parents.

Dozens showed up at a meeting last night with trustee Mike McKay.

Part of the plan is to move Grade 6 and 7 students from M.V. Beattie Elementary to A.L Fortune Secondary.

McKay shares parents’ concerns.

“However, I don’t think the concern is one that begins and ends whether there is a grade 7 cohort in the school or not in the school. That same concern should be there for all kids.

McKay says if there’s an issue around socially appropriate behaviour it has to be dealt with, with the community.

McKay is encouraged parents realize something has to be done to deal with growth.

The question is still how to get there, including the use of portables.

” Simple solution but it’s a whole boatload of money that I’d sure rather spend on programs and services if we can address the other issues.”

Those include moving the boundaries and moving children out of catchment into their home schools.

McKay says it comes down to one important thing.

” What we know is that in September we gotta be able to open the doors and accommodate the kids. We have to make sure we’re not just housing the kids but we’re in a position to provide high quality educational programs.”

Consultation continues with online surveys and McKay says he’ll be sending out more communications.

In the meantime, staff is working hard to address the concerns and roll out scenarios with potential ideas to be considered.

Recommendations will then be forwarded to Mike McKay in advance of the May 15th board meeting, at which time it’s hoped a final decision can be made.
