B.X. Press Cidery expansion plan gets thumbs up

A planned expansion of the B.X. Press Cidery has the blessing of most of the nearby neighbors, and local politicians.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) required owners Dave and Melissa (Missy) Dobernigg to receive feedback from neighbors within 100 metres as part of an application to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB).

The RDNO mailed letters to 38 land owners near the 4667 East Vernon Road property.

The Doberniggs started the business in 2013 to bring value added to the existing 40 acre apple orchard.

“My husband and I live next to the cidery and we are very much in favour of what is allowed for this young thriving business to stay profitable,” a support letter stated.

Seven responses (including one from the applicant, one from a nearby but non-adjacent property owner and two property owners who live next to the cidery) supported the proposal, indicating it would be an asset to the community. The applicant, who lives adjacent to the subject property, also provided a letter of support noting their desire to have amicable relationships with their neighbours.

Two responses were in opposition to the proposal indicating concerns regarding increased traffic and noise.

“Since the cidery expanded and added their live entertainment evenings, I can hear the music when I am in my backyard, and if they are allowed to develop further by having an outdoor patio and indoor lounge all day 7 days a week, with a maximum occupancy 150 people, the noise will greatly increase (from the people and music) and our residence will no longer be a quiet place. Also if they expand further, East Vernon Road, and especially BX Road, will be attracting a lot more traffic than it has now,” one of the letters in opposition stated.

In response to that letter, Missy Dobernigg told Vernon Matters, “We are actually only doing full concerts one night a week this year and maybe not at all after the expansion is built.”

The RDNO has voted to support the proposed expansion and forward the application to the LCRB.
