$275,000 goal

Arts council campaigning for a new centre in Enderby

Fundraising efforts are underway and grant applications to government are being explored as the Enderby and District Arts Council Society (EDAC) looks for a larger space.

“We have the Courtyard Gallery, which has done quite well, but it’s such a small space and people are always asking about classes,” Neil Fidler, EDAC president, said. “There is no place to hold them and last year with all these COVID restrictions, it has really disrupted everything.”

More gallery space would provide an opportunity for themed shows by a variety of local artists, classroom space for workshops and lessons, gathering space for socially distant music and performance productions, and multi-media production facilities.

The group has started a GoFundMe page, with a $50,000 goal. There are also hopes to get some government assistance to reach $275,000 for a down payment on a property.

“We have written to the City of Enderby and Regional District looking for support,” Fidler said. “It’s very difficult to get grant money for capital projects, but there are a few options we are looking at now, and we are looking for more.”

The Courtyard Gallery had 23 artists exhibiting last year, with over 2,000 visitors and $18,000 in revenue to artists.

“As far as economic activity goes, that would be the center point of any new arts centre we put on,” Fidler added. “People do seem to be interested in it, every community needs a focal point, there just isn’t one here really.”

There are some other competing community financial interests that council is dealing with including a new community swimming pool, and possible expenditures for Enderby Memorial Arena.
