Residents want four-way stop to stay

Feedback on a temporary four-way stop on 43rd Avenue and 20th Street is a great addition according to at least one member of Vernon Council.

“Residents in the area would like the four-way to remain even after construction on Pleasant Valley Road is completed,” Councillor Akbal Mund told Vernon Matters. “It may not be warranted post construction. Traffic counts will give us that information.”

The stop was installed when work began on Pleasant Valley Road earlier this year, and work is scheduled to be complete in about a month.

It is the final phase of the Pleasant Valley Road corridor upgrade, which began as a concept in 2010 and now will provide a north/south alternative route for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

The project includes road reconstruction, new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, multi-use path, a new storm main and outfall into BX Creek, a new storm treatment device to remove sediment, and safety improvement modifications to the 48th Avenue intersection.

The Pleasant Valley Road / 48th Avenue intersection is considered a high-collision intersection, based on the crash history. The scope of the safety improvements will be determined based on the ICBC road network screening project that is in progress.
