UPDATE Man’s death in Coldstream was homicide

UPDATE Oct. 5  3:15 p.m.

A suspicious incident in Coldstream last week is now a murder investigation.

The BC RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit said a local man died in hospital shortly after being found in medical distress last Thursday (October 1).

Police say around 3:30 a.m., Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and emergency medical first responders responded to the area of Kalamalka Road near Howe Drive in Coldstream, after a man covered in blood, in need of immediate medical assistance, was allowed into a home.

“The victim, who had been shot, happened to gain entry into the home of a medical professional who provided enhanced care while awaiting the arrival of emergency paramedics,” stated S/Sgt. Scott Aschenbrenner, Unit Commander of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit.

The victim, 27-year-old Zacheriah Bradley, was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services, in serious condition. He underwent emergency surgery, however despite the efforts of all those involved he succumbed to his injuries.

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, now deemed a homicide, and continues to be supported by the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and its general investigation section. Major crime investigators are releasing the victim’s identity in order to advance the ongoing investigation into his death.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP officers secured several locations in the area, in order to preserve any and all physical evidence.

Police do not mention any arrests being made in connection with the case, and Mounties have not said what the motive may have been.

UPDATE Oct.5

Police were back in the area of a serious occurrence in Coldstream over the weekend.

Global News reported officers were seen at a residence on Kalamalka Road Saturday and several vehicles were towed from the site.

RCMP have still not released any new details about the incident last Thursday which was reported as man in medical distress.

At one house on Kalamalka Road, a neighbour told Global someone pounded on her door early in that morning. The door is now splattered with red stains.

Vernon Matters took photos on Kalamalka Road just west of Howe Drive on Monday which appeared to be a large blood stain which had been circled in green with the letter ‘A’ beside it, and then several other smaller circles in white which may have been smaller blood stains that lead to the driveway of a nearby home.

As of 10:45 a.m. Monday (Oct. 5), RCMP had still not released any new details about the incident.

One unconfirmed report said a badly injured person was banging on doors in that area early that morning and was taken to hospital.

UPDATE 3 p.m. Oct. 2

RCMP continue to keep a tight lid on details about what appears to have been a serious incident in Coldstream.

Police officers and investigators spent all day Thursday at a site in the 9000 block of Kalamalka Road, east of Coldstream Creek Road, gathering evidence after what was described by Mounties as a “serious occurrence.”

The initial call was a a report of a man in medical distress.

In response to requests for more information from Vernon Matters, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media relations officer Chris Terleski issued the following reply:

“We will not be releasing any additional information at this time,” said Terleski.

The lack of official information is leading to all sorts of rumours and speculation about what happened.

One unconfirmed report is that a badly injured person was banging on doors in that area early that morning and was taken to hospital.

UPDATE 6 a.m. Oct. 2

Kalamalka Road has fully reopened to traffic.

RCMP have yet to release any new details on the incident.

A drive through the area shows two sites where yellow police tape was left, but no other obvious signs of where the incident took place.

UPDATE 6:00 p.m.

Kalamalka Road was still closed to vehicles just east of Coldstream Creek Road as police remained on the scene.

No further updates have been issued by RCMP.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.

Parts of two roads in Coldstream have been closed-off to vehicles and the public today as police investigate a suspicious incident.

Officers have been in the 9,000 block of Kalamalka Road near Howe Drive, since this morning after responding to a report of a man in medical distress.

No other details have been released, but police say there is no risk to the public.

Drive BC says both Aberdeen Road and Kalamalka Road in that area are closed until further notice.

UPDATE 8:20 a.m.

Police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious occurrence in Coldstream.

In the early morning hours of Thursday (Oct. 1), Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to a male reported to be in medical distress in the 9000 block of Kalamalka Lake Road in Coldstream. Police are currently on scene and conducting an investigation.

“Kalamalka Lake Road, in the area of Howe Drive, is closed to all members of the public and commuters will need to use an alternate route. This closure is expected to last several hours while police conduct their investigation. Police will provide updates as they become available,” said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer.

Terleski said there is no risk to the public and no further details are available for release at this time.

7 a.m.

Police are dealing with several incidents in the North Okanagan this morning.

Callers tells us Highway 6 has been blocked near the Veg Pro plant in Coldstream.

Vernon Matters has reached out to RCMP for details.

Another incident has a logging truck on its side on Mabel Lake Road about 2 kilometres from Lumby.

Traffic is being diverted on Rawlings Lake Road with emergency crews on the scene.
