UPDATE Vernon to study waste management and organics program
Vernon city council will support spending $25,000 for a review of its waste management systems.
“It’s time we took a more holistic approach and look at automated systems like Kelowna is using, where they have blue (recycling) black (garbage) and green (organic matter/yard waste),” said Mayor Victor Cumming.
The funding would be paid to a consultant who would also look into options for the collection and processing of household organics, diverting items which currently go into the landfill.
“The consultant would provide the information needed for a competitive procurement process for waste management options, evaluation of the cost proposals, and making recommendations on the preferred option or options to council,” stated a report to council from Laurie Cordell, manager of long range planning and sustainability.
