Fundraiser for gateway

Okanagan Rail Trail celebrates two years

Sep 23, 2020 | 3:07 PM

It’s been two years since the first bikers and hikers started using the Okanagan Rail Trail, and the group behind its fundraising wants to move forward with phase one of a new northern gateway by mid-October.

The gateway would be located at kilometer zero near Kalamalka Lake Road and College Way in Coldstream.

“Last fall we were excited to share a concept plan for a signature gateway at the north end of the rail trail. With a plaza, hilltop viewpoint, interpretive structures, public art, and Indigenous gardens, kilometre zero was on track to be the first fundraising campaign and a showpiece public space,” a Friends of Okanagan Rail Trail news release stated. “No one expected a global pandemic, and plans were put on hold.”

What is called the Sunflower campaign has raised 15 per cent of the required funds, the gateway will cost about $100 per square metre.

Grants from Okanagan Basin Water Board, RDNO, and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (through Ribbons of Green Trails Society) will get phase one underway and the group is now looking for individual donations to the project.

“Site grading is being completed and native plant restoration will showcase some of the beautiful, resilient, and culturally significant native plants at the northern trailhead, but a critical deadline is approaching,” the release added. “A low rock wall, seating and staging area are also planned. To give the plants the best chance of survival they need to be in the ground by late fall.”

Other fundraising efforts are happening in October with a virtual bike film festival on October 1.

Vernon, Silver Star and Kalamalka Rotary clubs have combined to put on a massive garage and bake sale on October 3, and funds from that event will be matched up to $2,000.
