A 39-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly roughing-up a man who was trying to get by him on a mobility scooter in downtown Vernon.

Police say the suspect was on a bicycle that was blocking access to the scooter on a sidewalk in the 3000 block of 30th Avenue Tuesday morning (Sept. 22).

“As the man on the mobility scooter attempted to pass by the bicycle, the owner of the bicycle got into a verbal altercation with the man yelling that he was not to be on the sidewalk,” said Cpl. Tania Finn. “The suspect blocked the path of the scooter and grabbed the man, knocked him to the ground and allegedly assaulted him. A member of the public intervened and the man on the mobility scooter was able to leave the area.”

Police say the incident was captured on video surveillance which helped officers locate the suspect.

“The disturbance drew the attention of the public who immediately contacted police. The suspect was arrested for assault causing bodily harm. The man on the mobility scooter, who was in his 60s, sustained visible non-life threatening injuries and is resting at home,” Finn added.

The alleged assailant, of no fixed address, is being held in custody while awaiting a court appearance.
