B.C. Covid update: 317 new cases, 6 more deaths

Sep 14, 2020 | 3:17 PM

The new Covid-19 case numbers remain high in B.C.

Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 317 new cases on Monday, with 137 between Friday and Saturday, 119 between Saturday and Sunday and 61 from Sunday and Monday.

Eight of the new cases were in Interior Health.

There are 17 active cases in the Interior and no one is in hospital.

There has now been 7,279 total cases in B.C.

Of particular concern, six more Covid-related deaths were announced on Monday, bringing the total to 219.

Five of the six deaths were “elders in long term care,” according to Henry, four in the Fraser Health region and one in Vancouver Coastal, while the other was the first fatality in the Northern Health area.

Henry reported 1,594 active cases, with 58 of those people in hospital and 16 in intensive or critical care.

A total of 3,047 people are under active health monitoring while 5,446 have recovered.

There are no new new health care or community outbreaks, and an outbreak at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver is declared over after seven cases to staff.

Dr. Henry also talked about the health impacts of wildfire smoke in communities, saying outdoor exercise should be avoided until the skies clear, and mask wearing can help to reduce the amount of inhaled particulates.

She added it can create confusion as some symptoms caused by smoke and Covid-19 are similar like dry cough or eye irritation, but symptoms like fever, chills and a persistent cough are more associated with Covid.

Henry again implored residents to go back to basic social interactions.

“We need to do this to protect our elders and our seniors. We need to stick to small groups. That means stick to six [groups of no more than 6 people]. Keep our groups small and spend time with the people we know,” said Henry.

Covid case counts by health region:

  • 2,557 Vancouver Coastal
  • 3,754 Fraser
  • 195 Island
  • 473 Interior
  • 216 Northern
  • 84 people who reside outside Canada
