Watch: The Prayer

Mother and son team up to sing and raise funds for NONA

First he sang with his dad, and now he’s teaming up with his mom.

Justin J. Moore of Vernon has the luxury of singing with either of his parents, Paul Moore of Armstrong and Melina Schein of Vernon, who are both Juillard-trained vocalists.

Justin’s first video with him and Paul singing Ed Sheeran’s Perfect surpassed 250,000 views on YouTube.

“My mom was a little jealous that I was getting so much publicity with my day, and I’ve sang with her just as much as my dad, so we decided it was only right that we did our own song,” Moore told Vernon Matters.

The duo teamed up to sing The Prayer, made famous by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Dion also did another version of the song with Josh Groban.

“This is a particularly important song for us because we’ve sang this so many times together on stage. It was one of the first classical songs I learned. It was a really good choice and it just kind of went naturally this way,” said Moore, a 19-year-old business student at Okanagan College.

While Justin and Paul sang and filmed their singing parts in separate sites, Justin and Melina were together which makes for an emotional moment on the video to be released on YouTube Sunday, Feb. 2

“At the very end of the song we actually get to hold hands when we’re doing our final notes which is what we do on stage,” Moore said.

Melina Schein is a vocal teacher and performer who runs Big Apple Productions.

Canada Helps will be in the video description and viewers will be able to go to that site and donate to the North Okanagan Neurological Association (NONA), a Vernon-based group which helps families with their children’s development.

“I thought NONA was the best option because it’s solely in the North Okanagan and it’s the youth in the North Okanagan and helping them succeed,” Moore added.

Moore says due to the positive reaction to Perfect, he is thinking of making a series of videos featuring him singing with his mother or father.

“I’m working with a videographer and we’re going to put out one video a week on my YouTube channel for the whole year, so that’s 52 videos and maybe 10 of those will be with my parents.”

Camera work on the video is provided by Clear Glass Media.
