New Queen Crowned To Open Winter Carnival

Batten down the hatches, me hearties…..The 59th annual Vernon Winter Carnival is underway!

The mid winter festival is celebrating the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow and Blackbeard with the theme “A Pirates Carnival.”

Queen Silver Star the 59th, Miss Kalamalka Rotary Hayley Rakos, was crowned Thursday night at the Performing Arts Centre.

Miss Silver Star Rotary, Madison Barrett, was named Princess and also Miss Congeniality.

“$10,000 was awarded in scholarships during the evening to the candidates for various skills including essay writing, speech, knowledge of Vernon and more,” says Carnival executive director Vicki Proulx.

Proulx says Queen and Princess Silver Star will be at many Winter Carnival events over the next 10 days and will serve as ambassadors for Greater Vernon through the next year.

The 59th annual event runs until Feb. 10th with around one hundred events, including the parade at noon Saturday.

“We are proud to continue to deliver classic and anticipated events such as BC Championship Snow Sculpture, Jopohouse luncheon, and the Carnival Parade, to name a few,” says Proulx.
