Upper Room Mission victimized by thieves

Vernon’s Upper Room Mission became the target of thieves early Thursday morning.

According to the organization’s Facebook page, the thieves cut through the fence and stole two large bins of donated bottles.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m.

The thieves were caught on video surveillance and the video has been turned over to the Vernon RCMP.

The bottles were supposed to help fund the Healthy Snacks program, which provides snacks to kids at three Vernon schools.

Money for the program will now have to come out of a reserve fund, leaving less money available to fund other initiatives like supplying blankets to those in need.

General Manager Cera Brown says that since taking to social media earlier in the day, the community has shown their support.

“Some of the community has already reached out, it has been amazing,” said Brown, who adds that the organization is always accepting bottles, blankets, and monetary donations to help run their programs.
