British Columbians not eating enough fruits and vegetables

A new report shows many people in B.C are not getting enough fruits and vegetables .

That’s according to Dr. Bonnie Henry, the Provincial Health Officer, who released her findings Friday on the state of the health of British Columbians.

” This tells us that it is a variety of things, people may not be getting the messages about healthy eating, and certainly the release of Canada’s new food guide is a really helpful thing for us and using that in the public health programs that we use in schools and daycare’s ,” said Henry who added that food insecurity within the province also factors into the disparaging numbers .

The report shows that seniors and young people aged 12-19 were the most likely to report eating fruits and vegetables five times a day from 2003- 2012 but those numbers have since declined.  People aged 20-34 and 35- 44 have been witnessing a slight rise in fruit and vegetable intake recently in comparison to previous years .

Across the province , the ministry noted that residents in the Interior have come up on top in terms of reported fruit and vegetable intake with Vancouver Island trailing closely behind. Residents in Northern B.C and and the Fraser Valley scored the lowest in reported fruit and vegetable intake with just nearly 38% meeting the target in 2013-2014.

Improvements in health messaging and education is something the ministry says they hope to implement in response to their findings.
