RDNO clarifies on possible single use plastics ban

Representatives from the Regional District of the North Okanagan say feedback has been relatively positive regarding the possible ban on single use plastics.

” I’ve had nothing but positive feedback,” said chair of the district , Kevin Acton.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the district’s general manager for community services, Mike Fox clarified how the possible ban would work in each of the individual communities in the RDNO.

” The Regional District will be making up a template that the municipalities could enact, ” said Fox, who added that it is up to the municipalities to pick and choose what they want to ban and how to enforce it.

The template would comprise of similar bylaws enacted in Victoria and Salmon Arm that bans plastic bags , straws , cutlery and other single use plastic items .

The Regional District has also hired a new environmental coordinator that will help educate business owners and residents on how to make the switch to more reusuable items .

The coordinator’s role starts February 11, 2019.

A committee of the whole meeting to discuss the single use plastics ban will be held on February 27, 2019.
