One Pot Shop Get City Support

A public hearing for three potential pot shops in Enderby drew over 100 people to city council.

Mayor Greg McCune says council gave the okay for one at #4-802 George Street which will now go to the province for approval.

“We were okay with that location,” McCune tells Beach Radio News.

One at 900 George Street wasn’t approved as it’s near a church and school, but the applicant will have a chance to make changes.

“It was left at second reading to see if maybe the neighborhood could be polled a bit better. They’re next to a church and school which isn’t in their favour but there may be some options to change a doorway, that type of thing,” says McCune.

A third application on Cliff Avenue did not get the go ahead as the community didn’t feel that was the right place.

“It’s right across the street from the library, and we heard from a lot of the community that we’ve made such nice in roads to getting our downtown where everyone wants it. It’s a very attractive place to go and hold events, and the community felt that wasn’t the appropriate place.”

The mayor says the public hearing allowed residents to have their say on the issue.

“People realize it is legal and they’re not opposed to it in itself, but just where it is. We’re a small community, we don’t have a lot of area so we let the applicants know,you’re going to have to hear from the public. We don’t have areas in town that will satisfy the needs that isn’t next to one of those things,” adds McCune.
