Bags, Straws and Cups Could Be On Ban List

Dec 17, 2018 | 6:30 AM

The chair of the Regional District of North Okanagan feels most of the public would support a ban on single use plastics in the region.

Kevin Acton says it would include things like plastic bags, straws, and perhaps even some cups used by businesses.

“Not one single person yet has said it’s a bad idea. I think it’s a good idea,” Acton tells Beach Radio News.

RDNO staff will look at what Victoria and Salmon Arm have done, when it comes to crafting a local bylaw.

Acton says it’s a change everyone would have to buy into.

“The whole idea is that we all get on board together. I would imagine everybody (board members) will be sent back to their councils to bring forward a resolution that matches the one at the regional district,” adds Acton.

RDNO staff will also launch a request for proposals for recycling at RDNO facilities, with its recycling program ending January 1.

Curbside recycling and recycling depots will not be affected.
