Vipers surrender five unanswered goals in 8-3 loss to Brooks

Oct 24, 2026 | 9:43 AM

Brooks, AB:  The Vernon Vipers kept pace with the Brooks Bandits through an entertaining opening period Friday night, but couldn’t sustain the momentum in an 8-3 loss at Centennial Regional Arena.

The two teams combined for six goals in the first period, with Vernon holding a pair of one-goal leads before heading to the intermission tied 3-3.

Luca Pura opened the scoring for Vernon, with newly acquired Cohen Handby recording an assist. Leon Gerber responded less than a minute later for Brooks.

Toms Trockis restored Vernon’s lead with a powerplay goal, but Makaio Van Tassel answered with a man-advantage marker of his own.

Van Tassel added his second of the period to give Brooks a 3-2 advantage before Van Martin scored his second goal of the season to even the score.

The Vipers generated several quality scoring opportunities in the second period but were unable to capitalize. Alexei Zhukov scored the lone goal of the frame to put the Bandits ahead 4-3.

Brooks took control in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals to complete the 8-3 victory.

Vernon finished 1-for-6 on the powerplay and killed off four of five Brooks opportunities.

The loss was Vernon’s second straight after falling 6-1 to the Okotoks Oilers on Wednesday night.

The Vipers are now two games into a five-game road trip through Alberta.
