Salmon Arm RCMP cruiser damaged in pursuit of stolen vehicles

A police cruiser was taken out of rotation after being rammed while in pursuit of a stolen truck in the Shuswap.

At around 10:43 p.m. Feb. 8 Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a report of a 2006 black F-350 being stolen from a property in Blind Bay.

Members of the complainant’s family followed the truck, but reported being followed by a grey 2004 F-350 that was later determined to also be stolen.

Salmon Arm RCMP caught up to the two stolen trucks and to the family’s vehicle, at which point the stolen trucks stopped in the middle of the road, and a female suspect exited the grey truck and jumped into the black one.

The family member disobeyed a police order and together they followed the stolen truck several kilometres up a dirt road, where they came to a stop. The stolen truck then reversed into the police cruiser, disabling the vehicle, before fleeing the scene again.

The black F-350 was later found after it struck a ditch in Eagle Bay, at which point a resident reported that a male and female suspect ran up a driveway and stole a 2006 Ford dump truck. That truck was tracked down to a forest service road where it was abandoned.

Police dogs were engaged and while searching the area police heard a woman calling for help. Just after 2 a.m. police received a 911 call from a woman who fell down an embankment into a stream and believed to have broken her leg. Police trekked through the woods and came across the woman, who was one of the suspects in the vehicle thefts.

She was treated at hospital but later released pending a future court date where she will face charges of possession of property obtained by crime, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.

Police said a male suspect was also identified, and that the case remained under investigation.

Salmon Arm RCMP also said it did not condone the family member getting involved in the pursuit of the stolen vehicle, saying it could create a risk to their personal or community safety. No other injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
