The Greater Vernon school district is offering supports in response to the killing of 10 people in Tumbler Ridge.

In a release, School District 22 said it was saddened by the news of the killings, and acknowledges that many students, staff and families may be experiencing a range of emotions.

SD22 affirmed that local students are safe and the district staff continue to focus on their wellbeing.

Additionally, the school district has a counselling team that can provide support to students in their schools.

The school district said people who want to have conversations with their children at home could:

  • Offer calm reassurance and remind your child they are safe
  • Share simple, honest information without going into detail
  • Invite your child to talk about their feelings and let them know their reactions are understandable
  • Limit exposure to news or online content about the events that occurred in Tumbler Ridge
  • Keep daily routines as consistent as possible to create a sense of stability

SD 22 also encouraged parents to reach out if they notice changes in their child’s behaviour, such as difficulty sleeping, ongoing worry, or withdrawal.

People can also find additional resources for youth here, and can find advice on how to speak with their children about these types of events here.

“This is a difficult time for school communities. We will move through this together with patience, care, and compassion. Thank you for your ongoing support and for trusting us with your children,” SD22 said in its release.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the citizens of Tumbler Ridge and stand in support of their community. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your school administrator.”
