A new report shows the significant economic impact of Kelowna International Airport.

The report – based on 2024 data – shows a total economic output of over $2-billion for that year.

The previous such report, in 2014, showed YLW had over 1.6 million passengers that year. Passenger traffic had increased to over 2.1 million by 2024.

The report, which is on the agenda for next week’s city council meeting, said it is beneficial for communicating the linkages between YLW and other aspects of the regional economy.

In 2024, YLW generated $2.08-billion in total economic output. This is a 163% increase from the 2014 study, reflecting both growth in passenger traffic and expanded airport activities. Key drivers of this output included non-resident visitor spending (39%), air carriers (22%), and maintenance, repair, and overhaul services (16%). Compared to similar regional airports, YLW’s economic output places it among the leading contributors to provincial economic activity, underscoring its strategic importance as a transportation hub.

In terms of broader regional impacts, YLW’s operations supported 9,210 full-time jobs in 2024, including 2,298 direct airport employees, jobs created through construction projects, and spending by visitors.

The total aggregate economic impact of YLW resulted in over $584-million in labour income in 2024. YLW’s influence extends well beyond direct employment. For example, the influx of visitors supports local hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses, boosting municipal revenues through increased tourism-related taxes and fees.
