Burning underway to reduce wildfire risk in Lake Country

Jan 7, 2026 | 2:26 PM

No need to call 9-1-1; the District of Lake Country has resumed controlled burning to get rid of woody debris.

It’s happening on Spion Kop and trail users, residents, and motorists on Highway 97 may notice the smoke and flames.

The project involves more machine and hand thinning, pruning, surface debris cleanup, piling and burning of debris in an effort to reduce the wildfire risk in Lake Country.

In a social media statement, the District said they are being briefed daily by the specialist wildfire crew from Rider Ventures Ltd that is doing the work, so there is no need to call 9-1-1.
