B.C. Highway Patrol is asking for public assistance relating to what it deemed “a mysterious” daytime fatal crash on Highway 5.

Police say a white Toyota Yaris crashed on the Coquihalla Highway between the Sowaqua chain-up area and Othello road sometime between 11:50 a.m. and 12:50 p.m., December 27.

The collision led to the vehicle going off the highway and down an embankment. The driver and sole occupant, a 21-year-old Vancouver woman, suffered critical injuries. The woman was taken to hospital but died two days later.

“This crash occurred in broad daylight, but police have not been able to locate a single witness so far,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, with B.C. Highway Patrol, stated.

“The driver was never able to tell police what happened. We need witnesses and video to make sure there’s no criminal cause.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage leading up to the incident were asked to call B.C. Highway Patrol at 604-702-4039 and quote file 2025-54575.
