Young hockey fans call Vipers game through Junior Broadcaster program

An initiative between the Vernon Vipers and 107.5 Beach Radio is allowing young fans to be part of the game experience.

The Junior Broadcaster program sees a lucky local student in Grade 6 through 12 pick up the mic and join the Vipers’ official play-by-play announcer, Graham Turnbull, in the broadcasting booth.

The program runs once a month, with the lucky youngster chosen from a list of submissions to Vernon Matters.

“This program provides a fantastic opportunity for local youth with a passion for hockey and broadcasting to get a taste of their dream job,” program organizers at Beach Radio stated.

“A past junior broadcaster, Luca Pitino, a Grade 6 student at the time, was featured in a YouTube video by the Vernon Vipers, showcasing his experience in the role.”

“Our radio station has always enjoyed a history of mentoring young talent, and the Junior Broadcaster Program fits with that blueprint beautifully,” Jason Armstrong, Beach Radio Program Director and Vipers’ Game Day Host, said.

“We’re giving kids the opportunity that they otherwise wouldn’t have to experience the industry and, at the same time, get some tips from one of the best in the business, Graham Turnbull.”

Details on how to apply for the Junior Broadcaster program can be found here.
