— UPDATE —

With the Noble Canyon wildfire contained, the District of Coldstream has rescinded the State of Local Emergency.

The State of Local Emergency was declared at the onset of the fire Friday, Sept. 5, but was rescinded Tuesday, Sept. 9, after the B.C. Wildfire Service deemed the wildfire near Lavington as being Under Control.

“The decision comes following a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, which has shown that the immediate threat to public safety and critical infrastructure has subsided,” the District of Coldstream said in a release.

“Conditions have stabilized, and the coordinated emergency response is no longer required at an elevated level.”

The district also deactivated its Emergency Operations Centre Tuesday, though stated it “continues to support recovery efforts and encourages residents to remain vigilant and follow any ongoing public safety guidance from local authorities or provincial partners.”

The people living near the site of the Noble Canyon wildfire no longer need to be on the edge, ready to evacuate from their homes.

The Evacuation Alerts that were in place for roughly 150 properties near the scene of the fire in Lavington was rescinded at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

The alert being lifted came as the fire was reclassified as Under Control Tuesday, meaning it was not expected to grow beyond the current boundaries.

“We would like to extend deepest gratitude to BC Wildfire Service, the Red Cross, our neighbouring local governments, the Coldstream and Lavington Fire Halls, and all supporting emergency services for their tireless efforts in protecting our community. Their expertise, commitment, and rapid response played a critical role in ensuring public safety,” The District of North Okanagan said in a release.

“We also want to sincerely thank residents and local businesses for their patience, preparedness, and cooperation throughout the duration of the alert. By staying informed and following directions from emergency officials, you helped contribute to a safe and effective response.”

Crews remained on the scene of the fire Tuesday morning, mopping up hot spots and ensuring the fire was contained.

The wildfire burning northeast of Lavington has been contained.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reclassified the Noble Canyon wildfire as Under Control Tuesday, Sept. 9, meaning it is not expected to burn beyond the current boundaries.

The BCWS told Vernon Matters the fire was Rank 1, or a smoldering ground fire, as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The provincial firefighting agency said it still had 53 firefighters assigned to the fire, though those numbers would be diminishing as crews are taken off as a result of the fire being contained.

The aerial resources remain on standby to be deployed if needed, but the BCWS told Vernon Matters it was unlikely they would be needed again.

The fire sparked on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 5, and burned an estimated 67 hectares of terrain over the weekend. The BCWS said it was suspected of being caused by human activity, though did not have specific details on the cause as it remained under investigation.

The Evacuation Alerts remained in effect for roughly 150 nearby properties as of Tuesday morning.

People in the affected area were advised to have a grab-and-go bag packed with essentials including crucial documents and medication so they can be ready to leave immediately if the situation worsens and Evacuation Orders are issued.
