Program rolling out in Vernon to address domestic violence

A local organization is launching a new program to try to reduce instances of domestic violence.

North Okanagan Youth and Family Services Society (NOYFSS) will roll out the new Making Relationshiops Safe – Counselling and Support for Men program in the fall.

The program is designed for men aged 18 or older who have used or at risk of using violence in relationships by offering a space to explore heathier ways of relating and building non-violent, trusting family dynamics.

“With growing calls across the province to recognize gender-based violence as an epidemic, programs like Making Relationships Safe play a vital role in prevention,” Dean Francks, Executive Director of NOYFSS, said.

“Helping men take meaningful steps toward change is deeply aligned with our mission of strengthening the family through healthy relationships.”

The program will offer both individual and group counselling to support participants as they reflect on harmful behaviours, take accountability, and learn practical skills to foster respectful relationships. NOYFSS also wants the program to build a supportive community of men who share similar experiences so they can learn from one another and hold each other accountable.

“We want to help men lead with respect, build trust, and create safety for the people they care about most,” Ben McLean, NOYFSS Program Facilitator, stated.

“Intake appointments are currently being scheduled, and men interested in participating are welcome to self-refer or can be referred by a support worker or community agency.”

People can register for the Making Relationships Safe – Counselling and Support for Men program by calling NOYFSS at 250-545-3572 or by emailing groups@noyfss.org.
