Vernon’s tennis legend retiring

For the final time, Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil is stepping onto a professional tennis court.

The 35-year-old announced he’ll retire after playing in the upcoming National Bank Open in Toronto.

Pospisil, who was born and raised in Vernon, received a main-draw wild card for his farewell tournament.

“Eighteen years of professional tennis,” Pospisil wrote on Instagram. “Looking forward to playing in front of you one last time in Toronto.”

Before competing on the world stage, Pospisil was a young kid learning the game on the public courts at Polson Park.

Coached by his father Miloš, who had emigrated from Czechoslovakia, Pospisil trained with borrowed gear, grit, and the support of Vernon’s tight-knit tennis community.

He carried that small-town spirit to the Olympics, the Davis Cup, and centre courts around the world, helping Canada win its first-ever Davis Cup title in 2022.

The National Bank Open runs July 27 to August 7.

For Vernon, it’s a chance to salute one of its most determined and decorated athletes.
