No fatal crashes over May Long Weekend: Highway Patrol

Jun 6, 2025 | 12:00 PM

B.C. Highway Patrol has reported that there were no fatal crashes anywhere in the province over the Victoria Day Long Weekend.

The police force said 2025 marked the first time in six years where no one was killed in a crash during the long weekend in May.

Highway Patrol said there were an average of four deaths over that long weekend between 2019 and 2023, and that 2024 say three people die in car crashes over the May Long Weekend.

However, officers still issued thousands of tickets and removed hundreds of vehicles off the road during the three day period.

Highway Patrol says there were over 2,200 tickets issued in the Okanagan region along. Those were part of the more than 9,600 tickets written across B.C. that weekend.

There were also 94 excessive speed infractions in the Okanagan over that weekend that resulted in vehicles being impounded. In total, Highway Patrol removed over 400 vehicles from B.C.’s roads due to speeding.

Highway Patrol will be running its Summer Impaired Driving Campaign in the near future, and reminds people to “take safe driving more seriously,” especially as the summer months bring more traffic to B.C.’s highways.
