Flood Watch issued for Merritt and the Nicola sub-basin

With temperatures starting to climb, a Flood Watch has been issued for a portion of the Southern Interior.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued the warning for the Nicola sub-basin, which includes the City of Merritt, Thursday, Feb. 20.

A report from the River Forecast Centre stated the area had experienced cold temperatures since early February. However, the mercury had been rising and could reach the 10 to 12 degree Celsius range over the weekend which, when coupled with rainfall in the forecast, could lead to river levels rising.

The provincial agency stated Flood Watches are issued when river levels are rising and pose a risk of spilling over the banks.

It noted the conditions could cause some flooding in areas adjacent to affected rivers.

The Nicola sub-basin was the only area in B.C. to have a Flood Watch in place as of Thursday.
