Care, Commitment & Innovation Earn “Best of the Best”

The BOB Awards’ title of Best of the Best Eyewear for 2025 went to Vernon Optometry. The results are 100% based on votes by the public. “It’s really meaningful because it’s real people thinking that we’re awesome, which means so much,” shared Dr. Meghan Ashton.

Having the largest frame gallery in town helped, but Dr. Ashton said it’s also about who patients and customers interact with at the clinic. “Our doctors and our staff are absolutely incredible.” She gets compliments on the staff every day. “They really, truly care about our patients and our community.”

With seven doctors, Vernon Optometry is a large practice that covers a range of ocular healthcare from regular eye exams to full-scope medical optometry.

They’ve also expanded what they offer in-office, including procedures like non-surgical lid lifts and IPL dry eye treatments. “For some of our patients who are suffering from that severe dry eye here in the Okanagan, it’s been a game changer.”

A quicker turnaround on eyeglasses is something else they provide their patients. A full on-site lab means they make the customized prescriptions for the frames they sell. “We’re the only optometry office that we know of in Canada, possibly North America, that does that,” stated Dr. Ashton.

A recent expansion means the lab now creates lenses for optometry clinics across Canada as well as down into the United States. Dr. Ashton shared how satisfying it is to see locally made lenses marked for places like Gander, Newfoundland.

Connected to their geothermal system, the heat generated by lens manufacturing heats the entire building all winter – the first lab in the world to do that. The local lab also lowers the carbon footprint for every pair of prescription glasses they sell.

Dedication to the environment is one of the corporate principles that guides Vernon Optometry. Along with the geothermal system, there’s also a 100-panel solar farm on top of the building.

Even with all the innovations and state-of-the-art technology, the “Best of the Best” title from locals means the world. “I really want to emphasize how thankful I am for my staff being so amazing and for the community of Vernon supporting us so much.”
