Luncheon to support child and youth victims of abuse

Oct 14, 2024 | 1:59 PM

A lunch event will be supporting an organization that helps children and youth who are victims of abuse and violence.

A luncheon will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, to support the Oak Child and Youth Advocacy centre and the programs and services it offers to child and youth victims.

Operating in partnership with other local organizations and under the umbrella of the Archway Society for Domestic Peace, the Oak centre is a safe space for people ages 18 and under to receive support.

“Abuse and violence against children and youth can take many forms including physical, sexual and emotional abuse which can be perpetuated by either adults or peers,” Brooke McLardy, Oak Centre Director, said.

“Without proper supports, the long-term impacts of child abuse are far-reaching and can include substance use issues, homelessness, poverty, and ongoing struggles with mental health.”

To help the Oak Centre maintain it’s operations, a fundraising luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Vernon RCMP detachment on 30th Street Wednesday, Oct. 16. Chili, buns, beverages and desert will be offered for a $12 donation.

“We’re very proud of our relationship with the Oak Centre and everything they do for the most vulnerable among us,” Corporal Ashley Fast of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s Special Victim’s Unit said.

“We’re really excited to be part of this event and encourage everyone to come out. Together, and with your support, we can help ensure those in need receive the care, assistance, and protection they deserve.”

Proceeds will go to supporting the Oak Centre, while the event will also act as a platform to raise awareness of child and youth abuse.

Youth and children who have experienced or witnessed abuse or violence can contact the Oak Child and Youth Advocacy Centre online or at 778-475-2920.
