With wildfires burning in the Okanagan and Shuswap, the City of Vernon is encouraging people sign up for the Alertable app.

Through Alertable, people can receive fast, reliable emergency information from the city’s Emergency Program, such as updates on wildfire and flooding events, and Evacuation Alerts and Orders, directly to their smart devices.

“Getting timely and accurate information can make all the difference in how quickly a community can respond to an emergency,” Sue Saunders, Vernon’s emergency program coordinator, said.

“Alertable allows us to quickly and effectively communicate with residents and visitors during emergencies, helping everyone stay informed and prepared. We strongly encourage every resident, business and visitor to sign up for Alertable.”

In order to receive notifications from the city, people will need to install the app on their device, preferably a cell phone, and then follow ‘Vernon, B.C.’

The system is used by other jurisdictions in the North Okanagan and surrounding areas, and is also a tool used by Environment Canada and DriveBC to notify people of weather and highway events.

More information on how to download and use the Alertable app can be found at the city’s website.
