The Community Give Back Project

A local company has rolled out a heartwarming initiative, sparked by a spontaneous act of kindness.

Todd and Kate Embley are the owners of KT Fairglass. Last winter, Todd had a chance encounter with a father caring full-time for his son who had suffered a severe brain injury. Noticing that their home’s main living room window was full of condensation and foggy, Todd was inspired to help have it replaced free of charge. A few months later they jumped at the opportunity to assist a Lumby woman with much-needed home improvements.

With two completed projects, Todd and Kate knew this was something they wanted to continue. And The Community Give Back Project was born.

They spent some time building a webpage, creating a nomination form, and generally getting things more formalized. With a long-term goal to do one Give Back project every month, Kate said for now one a quarter is realistic. In part because some projects might grow beyond windows, which is why they’re open to partnering with other businesses in the community.

with a broken window that gets super, super cold,” stated Kate. “She wants her grandson to be able to stay with her, but he can’t because of how cold the room gets. But also, her entryway can use some paint.”

The project for Violet Cox is an example of what is possible through collaboration with other tradespeople. It started with the plan to replace two windows and grew into a complete bathroom renovation to accommodate the Lumby woman’s mobility challenges.

The concept of the project though is to meet window needs for families in need, without it necessarily scaling beyond that. Kate and Todd submit a request to their supplier for the window donation, and then KT Fairglass takes it from there covering the labour and materials.

The form also includes a space to upload a picture of the current window that needs replacing.

Nominations are welcome from any of the area that KT Fairglass serves, from Salmon Arm to Lake Country.

“We’re in a position to be able to give and support in a unique way. We love the community, we love living here,” stated Todd. “And we’re fortunate so we don’t want to just sit around, we want to be able to use it to help others who just aren’t as lucky in life.”
