The event that got its start 39 years ago in Vernon takes over the Department of National Defence (DND) fields for the Canada Day long weekend.

The Funtastic Slo-Pitch and A&W Music Festival starts Friday afternoon and continues until Canada Day on July 1, with 115 teams registered for the softball, and thousands expected to take in the music concerts.

Executive manager Diana Williamson said 81 of the teams are from cities other than Greater Vernon.

Williamson said they are gearing up for their 40th year in 2026 (event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid).

“Plans are underway already. We are presenting the community grant donations on Saturday night. We have a raffle and 50/50 running throughout the weekend,” Williamson told Vernon Matters.

Other sports new for 2024 include volleyball at Polson Park on Saturday and Sunday, a two-day lawn bowling tournament, also at the park, and cornhole.

The non-profit society that runs the festival uses the proceeds to give out as community grants to sports and recreation groups, with over $2.4 million given back over the years.
