A pair of fires that sparked in the Cosens Bay area of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park last week have been deemed suspicious in nature.

The two spot fires occurred at around 1:20 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, and Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said fire officials alerted police after responding to the second fire, as both were believed to be human-caused and suspicious.

“Despite the recent rain, it has been a relatively dry spring,” Corporal Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“The risk of a fire is already heightened and we are asking all park users to be extra vigilant.”

A drone was deployed to scan the park trails while police conducted checks of people in the area, though no suspects were identified.

The RCMP’s investigation into the cause of the fires is ongoing, and anyone with information relating to the incidents is asked to call the RCMP at 250-545-7171, or to file an anonymous report with Crime Stoppers online or at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The police add a cash reward may be given for information that leads to an arrest.
